Article

Last week, we introduced the birthstones of every month. Many readers begin to get interested in our special and meaningful birthstones. Therefore, we decide to make a detailed introduction to these wonderful birthstones. Start with our February birthstone Amethyst at the beginning of February.

  1. WHAT IS AMETHYST?

Amethyst is a sparkling semi-precious gemstone filled with character and steeped in long historical references - not to particularly mention, it's rather attractive.

There are no two exactly same Amethyst gemstones, but what is consistent is that it is a member of the quartz family of minerals.

A different quirk of this particular stone is that its special structure means that the color of the stones that are cut from the rough is never uniform in shade - you will get a nice variety of shades of violet or purple in your Amethyst gemstones all the time.

  1. WHAT ARE THE ORIGINS OF AMETHYST?

Let's check the definition of Amethyst made by Wikipedia. It is a violet variety of quartz. The name comes from the Koine Greek αμέθυστος amethystos from α- a-, "not" and μεθύσκω (Ancient Greek) methysko / μεθώ metho (Modern Greek), "intoxicate", a reference to the belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness. The ancient Greeks wore amethyst and carved drinking vessels from it in the belief that it would prevent intoxication.

Now we know that the etymology of the name of the gemstone itself derives from the Greek amethystos, which, according to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, has something to do with avoiding intoxication. The general belief is that drinking vessels that were carved out of or at least studded with the violet stone would help the drinker avoid getting drunk, even from tipples on the stronger side.

Such kind of protectionism is typical of many gemstones of the world - the likes of Moonstone was used in Ancient Greece to protect travelers and soldiers whilst they were out on the road at night.

  1. IS AMETHYST A BIRTHSTONE?

Because of its associations with love and romance, it may be no surprise to learn that Amethyst is the traditional birthstone of February - the month of Valentine's Day. It is, in fact, the stone of St Valentine himself. That means that it has been used to express great faith and love between people in many a civilization over the years and its strength in that regard is certainly not going to be waning any time soon.
